Cast Iron Radiators Frequently Asked Questions

Q, Why are your Cast Iron Radiators such great value?

CastIronRadiators.com is most competitive retailer of cast iron radiators in the UK. We can say this confidently because we are the manufacturer of this product. We keep our prices on this site the most competitive because we offer a limited range of our most popular cast iron radiators in a limited range of our most popular colours and finishes - this allows us to keep costs down and stay the most competitive in the UK.

Q, Are Cast Iron radiators efficient?

Cast Iron radiators are very efficient - but they are different to modern pressed steel radiators. Cast iron heats up and cools slowly so when your boiler is turned on it will take longer to emit heat from your cast iron radiators than if you were to have pressed steel radiators that heat up very quickly and disseminate heat very quickly. Likewise, after your boiler is turned off your cast iron radiators will continue to emit the built up heat. Therefore the energy output is the same as a modern pressed steel radiator - but over an extended period of time. Our customers have found that in Cast Iron Radiators do tend to be more suitable for traditional properties, especially stone properties where slow and steady heat is required over longer periods of time.

Q, Why are our longest standard radiators approximately 1.2m long?

The main reason why the cast iron radiators offered on this site are all under 1200mm is because we use pallet partners to deliver our product and therefore your cast iron radiators have to fit on a pallet. If you want a larger cast iron radiator you should contact our sister company on 01723 321 000 or visit their site at www.castironradiators.ltd.uk and they can discuss the options with you.

Q, Are your cast iron radiators guaranteed?

Yes, all Cast Iron radiators of all designs are guaranteed for at least 10 years with European Sovereign or Classic Castings being guaranteed for 25 years - a lifetime guarantee. Our Cast Iron Radiators are made using traditional techniques and as long as they are looked after should last a lifetime. We deal with many reclaimed radiators that are over a century old, there is no reason why your Cast Iron Radiator should not continue to warm your home for generations to come.

Q, How do I work out how big my Cast Iron radiator needs to be?

The easiest way to work this out is to measure your room and input the dimensions into our BTU calculator. Alternatively, if you would like us to work this out please forward your room dimensions to us at info@CastIronRadiators.com and we will work it out for you.

Q, What size pipe work is required?

Our cast iron radiators generally take ½” BSP (British Standard Pipe). The diameter of the pipe work required to supply your cast iron radiators will be determined by the systems supply requirement. If your system doesn't use British Standard Pipe, please contact us on 01723 321 444 and we can discuss your options or fit a suitable adapter.

Q, What colour can I have my Cast Iron radiators in?

All of the cast iron radiators on this site are sold as seen. However, if you would like a cast iron radiator in a specific colour or a radiator in a different colour, you should contact our sister company at www.castironradiators.ltd.uk or call them on 01723 321 000 to discuss your specific requirements. Cast Iron Radiators ltd manufacture bespoke traditional radiators to your exact requirements.

Q, Do I need wallstays?

Wallstays should always be used with our Cast Iron radiators. They stabilise the Cast Iron radiator and prevent the radiator from being accidentally knocked over. Cast Iron Radiators are very heavy, when they have water in they are very very heavy. It is human nature to run your hand over the top of a warm cast iron radiator - wall stays are essential.

Q, How long does delivery take?

All Cast Iron Radiators we sell are assembled, finished to order and individually fully tested. You should expect your cast iron radiators to be dispatched the next business day from your purchase. You will be called in advance of dispatch to ensure that you are ready to receive the items.

Q, How will my Cast Iron radiators be delivered?

Your Cast Iron radiators will be delivered on a pallet with a lorry that will have a tail lift. This pallet can be moved around on flat, solid ground with a pallet truck that will be on board the lorry, and the drivers are usually willing to help where possible. However, you will need sufficient manpower to carry your Cast Iron radiators into your property. Please be aware that Cast Iron radiators are very heavy and 2 or 3 people may be required.

Q, Should I use Inhibitors or other plumbing compounds with my Cast Iron Radiators?

We recommend using Ph neutral inhibitors with your cast iron radiators, but NO caustic/corrosive/acidic plumbing compounds or liquids are to be used on or in any part of our cast iron radiators, our valves or connections. If aggressive flushing agents are used in our cast iron radiators, the water in your system must be neutralised correctly following their use appropriate crystals or similar. Where caustic and/or corrosive compounds (liquid or other) have been introduced into the radiator(s) which have caused damage to gaskets, this will invalidate any guarantee offered.

Q, What extras do I need with my cast iron radiators?

In addition to your cast iron radiators, you will need a radiator valve to regulate the water going through your radiator. It is essential that you also purchase a wallstay to tie the cast iron radiator into the wall. You may also purchase a pipe shroud and luxury bleed valve for the finishing touch. Pipe shrouds are purely cosmetic, but they can cover any untidy pipework or make the pipework appear to match the cast iron radiator.
